Focus Features acquires Edgar Wright’s The Sparks Brothers

February 24, 2021 by EJ Moreno

Sundance darling The Sparks Brothers has found a home with Focus Features. The documentary received rave reviews from critics and audiences and will now see a wide release through the distribution company.

The Sparks Brothers offer a look at siblings Ron and Russell Mael, the duo that makes up the enigmatic rock-pop duo known as Sparks. Wright’s film captures the band’s impact that grew over their decades-long career. The documentary featured various celebrities and musicians like Flea, Beck, Jack Antonoff, and Jason Schwartzman.

“It’s hard to imagine a better pairing of subjects and filmmaker than Ron and Russell and Edgar,” says Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski. “For the past five decades, Sparks have been pushing the bounds of pop music with iconoclastic style and a perpetual mission to try something new rather than relying on the tried-and-true. It’s that perseverance that has made them among the most influential bands in history.”

In our ★★★★ review from Sundance, critic Shaun Munro called Edgar Wright’s The Sparks Brothers an “extremely persuasive argument for the band’s continual evolution and reinvention.” He said the documentary is “soaring joy from start to finish.”

At the time of reporting, Focus Features has not set a release date for The Sparks Brothers.
