Fox to lose $50 million on The Kid Who Would Be King

January 30, 2019 by Gary Collinson

It looks like we already have our first major box office bust of 2019, with Attack the Block director Joe Cornish’s second film The Kid Who Would Be King reportedly looking at a loss of around $50 million for studio 20th Century Fox.

The fantasy adventure film stars Louis Ashbourne Serkis as a young boy who stumbles upon King Arthur’s legendary sword Excalibur and finds himself tasked with assembling a new Round Table to protect the world from the enchantress Morgan le Fay (Rebecca Ferguson).

The Kid Who Would Be King opened in the United States this past weekend with just $7 million from 3,521 screens across the country; add in international receipts of $3.3 million and the $59 million-budgeted movie has pulled in just over $10 million to date.

According to Variety, when you take its expensive marketing costs into account Fox is looking at a hit of around $50 million from its theatrical release. However, those losses will eventually be reduced through home-entertainment sales, TV deals and other ancillary revenue.

Old school magic meets the modern world in the epic adventure THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING. Alex (Ashbourne Serkis) thinks he’s just another nobody, until he stumbles upon the mythical Sword in the Stone, Excalibur. Now, he must unite his friends and enemies into a band of knights and, together with the legendary wizard Merlin (Stewart), take on the wicked enchantress Morgana (Ferguson). With the future at stake, Alex must become the great leader he never dreamed he could be.

The Kid Who Would Be King features a cast that includes Louis Ashbourne Serkis, Tom Taylor, Angus Imrie, Patrick Stewart, Dean Chaumoo, Rhianna Dorris, Rebecca Ferguson, Denise Gough, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, and Nick Mohammed.
