Gael Garcia Bernal to star in Zorro Reborn

February 17, 2012 by admin

Gael Garcia Bernal (Y Tu Mama Tambien, The Motorcycle Diaries) is set to play the lead role in Zorro Reborn, a sci-fi reimagining of the Zorro mythology that will take place in an apocalyptic wasteland. This futuristic take on the story of the Spanish swordsman will portray him as a masked vigilante fueled by vengeance.

Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy (Harker) have written the script along with Glenn Gers (Fracture), and 20th Century Fox is currently seeking a director for the project.

Zorro was last seen on the big screen in Martin Campbell’s 2005 film The Legend of Zorro, where he was played by Antonio Banderas. The studio behind that film, Sony Pictures, is developing its own reboot of Zorro based on the Chilean author Isabel Allende’s novel about his origin story.

Garcia Bernal will next be appearing opposite Will Ferrell in the Spanish-language comedy Casa de mi Padre, with Al Pacino in Hands of Stone, and alongside Daniel Day-Lewis and Benicio Del Toro in Martin Scorsese’s Silence.
