Game of Thrones’ Conleth Hill weighs in on the Jon and Daenerys meeting

August 2, 2017 by Samuel Brace

Conleth Hill, the actor behind Lord Varys in Game of Thrones, has spoken about the intense meeting between Jon and Daenerys.

This past week saw the two fan favourite characters finally meet as Jon made his way to Dragonstone, hoping to enlist the invading Daenerys to help him in his fight against the White Walkers.

Their initial meeting was tense to say the least, with neither willing to give the other what they desired.

One of the actors who was privy to the meeting was Conleth Hill who plays Varys. He told Variety that the meeting could have been much worse.

“They’re both headstrong kids,” Hill said. “They’ve been the leader of their own pack for so long, and there’s of course a history of bad blood between their families. But they managed not to kill each other.”

“It was ice and fire really,” Hill continued. “I think Tyrion’s temperature control helped a lot. I don’t think it went as badly as it could have. Had their characters met earlier, they might have pulled a knife or had a fight. I think they’re just getting to the stage now where the future of the world is more important than any ego trip they might have had.”

The start of season 7 hasn’t been a successful one for Daenerys, and this week was no different, seeing her navy and infantry effectively wiped out thanks to some bad tactical decisions while trying to take the Lannister home of Casterly Rock.

These events also led to a rewarding meeting between Jaime and Olenna, with Jaime giving her the opportunity to take her own life after capturing Highgarden.

“Jaime and Cersei knew that their home would be a target and anticipated it,” Hill said. “If you’re dealing with a family member as opposed to an opponent where you don’t know how they think–I mean, that’s war. Sometimes there are victories and sometimes there are losses. But she’s still got those three dragons and the Dothraki and all the Unsullied. I will say that Diana Rigg’s exit was beautiful.”
