Gemma Whelan says Game of Thrones sex scenes were a “frenzied mess”

November 5, 2021 by Liam Waddington

Throughout its lifetime, HBO’s Game of Thrones gained a reputation for implementing an excessive number of explicit sex scenes, and now, one of the stars of the show has revealed that these scenes had no clear direction during filming.

In an interview with The Guardian, Gemma Whelan, who played Yara Greyjoy in the series, revealed that the show’s sex scenes were a “frenzied mess” and actors were often left to figure it out by themselves.

“Almost literally. They used to just say, ‘When we shout action, go for it!’, and it could be a sort of frenzied mess. But between the actors there was always an instinct to check in with each other. There was in a scene in a brothel with a woman and she was so exposed that we talked together about where the camera would be and what she was happy with. A director might say, ‘Bit of boob biting, then slap her bum and go!’, but I’d always talk through it with the other actor.”

When asked about the one particular sex scene involving Yara and Alfie Allen’s Theon in the second season of Game of Thrones, which was later revealed to be incestuous within the story, Whelan commented that her co-star was thoughtful during filming, stating that he would ask her: “Is this OK? How are we going to make this work?”
