Geoff Johns and Jason Fabock reveal first look at Batman: Three Jokers at Comic-Con

July 20, 2018 by Ricky Church

Back in April at the C2E2 convention, DC artist Jason Fabok revealed he was working on a Batman miniseries with DC superstar and former CCO Geoff Johns that would delve into the apparent mystery of the three different Jokers. Now Johns has given more information on Batman: Three Jokers, including a first look at the miniseries, during his panel at the San Diego Comic-Con International.

This mystery was first presented as DC ended The New 52 and began the DC Rebirth relaunch. In the final issues of Johns’ Justice League, Batman gained god-like powers to know every answer in the universe through the Mobius Chair. After asking the chair who The Joker really was, it responded with “There are three.” Despite that reveal, the mystery wasn’t picked up again as Johns was saving it for another opportunity.

Batman: Three Jokers will delve into that mystery and offer “a grounded, emotional story about the mystery of the Joker. It will focus on Bruce, Barbara and Jason.” Johns stated at the panel. The three-issue miniseries will be published under DC’s upcoming Black Label imprint, a brand that will be separate from the main DC continuity, though this story will still take place in the main universe.

“I’ve never really done a Batman story beyond Batman: Earth One, and if I’m going to tell a Batman story, I want it to be amazing and cool and something no one’s ever seen before,” Johns said. “This is a story about the shared pain between Bruce and Barbara and Jason and the way that some scars heal wrong and some heal right. I think of this as a Joker story. By the end of this series, Bruce and Joker will have a relationship that is completely different than the one they have now.”

Colourist Brad Anderson, who worked with Fabok on John’s final Justice League arc and is currently colouring John’s Doomsday Clock, will be reteaming with the pair for Three Jokers. There is no date for when the miniseries will be published yet.
