With Game of Thrones set to end this month, HBO has spent the past couple of years working hard on five potential spinoff projects based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire universe.
One of those, going by the unofficial working title of The Long Night, is gearing up to shoot a pilot, but the status of the others has been a little unclear, with Thrones producer Bryan Cogman revealing this past week that his own project – co-written with Martin – is no longer moving forward.
Well, posting on his official blog, Martin has now offered some clarification, revealing that three of the “successor shows” remain in development.
“We have had five different Game of Thrones successor shows in development (I mislike the term ‘spin-offs’) at HBO, and three of them are still moving forward nicely,” said Martin. “The one I am not supposed to call The Long Night will be shooting later this year, and two other shows remain in the script stage, but are edging closer. What are they about? I cannot say. But maybe some of you should pick up a copy of Fire & Blood and come up with your own theories.”

In case you’re unaware, Fire & Blood is Martin’s latest book and chronicles the history of House Targaryen from the exploits of Aegon the Conqueror, the first Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and creator of the Iron Throne, through the subsequent Targaryen kings. This isn’t the first time that Martin has hinted at a Targaryen-centred prequel, and there’s certainly a wealth of material to be explored here.
The first spinoff, created by Martin and Jane Goldman (Kingsman), is set to feature a cast that includes Naomi Watts (Gypsy), Josh Whitehouse(Poldark) are Naomi Ackie (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) and is described as follows:
“Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”
