Glen Powell is not afraid to bring us back to the ’90s with his movie choices. From Twisters to Anyone But You, he brings us to a simpler time in film. Now, he’s teaming with one of the 1990s’ most beloved filmmakers, Ron Howard.
Amazon MGM Studios has confirmed the production of a new firefighter-focused film, with Powell attached to star and Howard set to direct. Imagine Entertainment and Powell’s banner, Barnstorm, are reportedly producing the film.
The idea and script come from Christina Hodson, best known as the screenwriter of Transformers spin-off Bumblebee, and both Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey and The Flash for Warner Bros. and DC Comics. She’s currently co-writing a screenplay for the 11th Fast and the Furious entry with Oren Uziel.
The film will reportedly follow “disparate childhood friends, now elite firefighters, who must rekindle their fractured relationship when a series of deadly fires sweep across Texas.”
Many have pointed out that Ron Howard is re-entering familiar territory with this still-untitled project. He had already directed a beloved firefighter movie, 1991’s Backdraft. The film grossed $152.4 million worldwide. It received three Academy Award nominations for Best Sound, Best Sound Editing, and Best Visual Effects.
Next up for Glen Powell is Edgar Wright’s The Running Man, scheduled for release in November, and the Hulu comedy series Chad Powers, set to premiere in late September. Watch the teaser trailer here.
