Grown-ish star Yara Shahidi to play Tinker Bell in Disney’s Peter Pan & Wendy

September 26, 2020 by EJ Moreno

Get the fairy dust ready, because Disney has found its Tinker Bell for the upcoming live-action Disney remake of Peter Pan with Grown-ish star Yara Shahidi set to play the iconic fairy.

Shahidi joins the previously cast Jude Law, who is playing Pan’s nemesis Captain Hook, in the film titled Peter Pan & Wendy. Alexander Molony and Ever Anderson will also play Peter and Wendy, respectively.

Director of the Pete’s Dragon remake David Lowery is on board to helm the project from a script co-written with Toby Halbrooks. They’ll look to tackle Disney’s 1953 animated movie, which was based on the character created by Scottish novelist and playwright J. M. Barrie in 1902. Since then, the story has seen many a retelling, most recently with the 2015 fantasy Pan starring Hugh Jackman.

Yara Shahidi portraying Tinker Bell marks the first time a woman of color has taken on the role. Mae Whitman voiced the character in many of Disney’s straight-to-video animated features, while Julia Roberts famously played the role in 1991’s Hook.
