Guardians of the Galaxy overtakes Thor: The Dark World to become Marvel’s fourth-highest grossing movie worldwide

October 4, 2014 by Gary Collinson

Last weekend Guardians of the Galaxy overtook the domestic box office take of 2008’s Iron Man ($318.3 million) – not to mention fellow franchise starters Transformers ($319.1 million) and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone ($317.6 million) and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring ($314.2 million) – and now the film has climbed above Thor: The Dark World globally to become the fourth-biggest earner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Guardians is currently sitting on $645.4 million worldwide, and with the film due to open in China next weekend, it surely has a good chance of reaching the $714.1 million laid down by Captain America: The Winter Soldier earlier in the year.

Guardians of the Galaxy is directed by James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt (The Lego Movie) as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora, Dave Bautista (Riddick) as Drax the Destroyer, Bradley Cooper (American Hustle) as Rocket Raccoon, Vin Diesel (Fast & Furious 6) as Groot, Benicio Del Toro (Sin City) as The Collector, Lee Pace (The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug) as Ronan the Accuser, Karen Gillan (Doctor Who) as Nebula, Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond) as Korath, John C. Reilly (Step Brothers) as Rhomman Dey,  Michael Rooker (The Walking Dead) as Yondu, Glenn Close (Damages) as Nova Prime Rael and Josh Brolin (Men in Black 3) as Thanos.
