Hans Zimmer returns to superheroes again to score Wonder Woman 1984

August 23, 2018 by Ricky Church

After announcing his ‘retirement’ from superhero films a couple years ago and then coming out of it to score X-Men: Dark Phoenix, it seems that Hans Zimmer isn’t done with the superhero genre just yet. The famed composer will once again return to the DC Universe by scoring Patty Jenkins’ anticipated Wonder Woman 1984.

Zimmer is one of Hollywood’s most prolific composers, having created the scores for several blockbuster films such as Gladiator, Pirates of the Caribbean, Interstellar and most recently Blade Runner 2049. Within the superhero genre Zimmer is responsible for many of the themes audiences know and love. He worked on all three of Christopher Nolan’s films in The Dark Knight trilogy and Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It was after Batman v Superman he ‘retired’ from the genre while Rupert Gregson-Williams, one of Zimmer’s proteges, composed the score for Jenkins’ first Wonder Woman film. It is fitting that Zimmer will return to the character since he originated his very memorable and kick-ass theme for the Amazonian warrior in Batman v Superman.

Zimmer will have plenty of work in 2019 as he is scoring Wonder Woman 1984, X-Men: Dark Phoenix and the live-action The Lion King, for which he also had composed the music in the original animated film. Gregson-Williams, meanwhile, is the composer for James Wans’ Aquaman.

Wonder Woman 1984 sees Gal Gadot once again leading the cast as Diana Prince alongside the returning Chris Pine (Steve Trevor), Ewen Bremner (Charlie), Said Taghmaoui (Sameer), Connie Nielsen (Queen Hippolyta), Lisa Loven Kongsli (Menalippe), Doutzen Kroes (Venelia) and new additions Kristen Wiig (Ghostbusters) as Barbara Ann Minerva/Cheetah and Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones), Natasha Rothwell (Love, Simon), Ravi Patel (Master of None, Grandfathered) and Gabriella Wilde (Doctor Who, Poldark) in an as-yet-unrevealed roles.
