HBO boss says Game of Thrones will not receive a direct sequel or spin-off

May 23, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Casey Bloys, HBO’s programming president, has revealed that there will not be a direct sequel or spin-off series to Game of Thrones.

Now that epic fantasy drama Game of Thrones has come to an end, fans of this world are starting to turn their attention to the in-production prequel series that will begin filming next month. But could we ever see a direct sequel or spin-off to the main show that perhaps follows familiar characters?

Apparently not, according to HBO programming president Casey Bloys. Speaking to THR, Bloys revealed that he would not be in favour of continuing the main series when responding to a question about making a sequel:

“Nope, nope, nope. No. Part of it is, I do want this show — this Game of Thrones, Dan and David’s show — to be its own thing. I don’t want to take characters from this world that they did beautifully and put them off into another world with someone else creating it. I want to let it be the artistic piece they’ve got. That’s one of the reasons why I’m not trying to do the same show over. George has a massive, massive world; there are so many ways in. That’s why we’re trying to do things that feel distinct — and to not try and redo the same show. That’s probably one of the reasons why, right now, a sequel or picking up any of the other characters doesn’t make sense for us.”

This certainly seems like the smart move, while continuing to produce content set in this world will surely please fans, the last thing people want is to see the same thing over and over again, especially as it is unlikely to be able to live up to the original. Fingers crossed the prequel will capture the spirit of Game of Thrones while providing a brand new tale that feels fresh and exciting.
