HBO makes it clear: Game of Thrones will never have a revival following Season 8

January 16, 2018 by Jordan Jones

Sorry Game of Thrones fans, but if you were hoping for a surprise revival of HBO’s Game of Thrones in the far-flung future, prepare to be disappointed. Talking with THR, HBO President of Programming Casey Bloys was asked about the potential of a Game of Thrones revival, to which he replied:

“That’s not happening. This story, A Song of Ice and Fire, is done. There’s no revival, reboot, spinoff talk.”

That’s not surprising. The show has been on the air for a while now — the first episode aired back in 2011 — and it’s safe to say that the actors are a bit exhausted, and would probably like the chance to pursue other projects. Now, A Song of Ice and Fire is merely one story that can be told in the world that George R.R. Martin has crafted. There was nothing in that quote that said Westeros was out of the picture, or its bordering lands.

When Casey Bloys says spinoff, of course, it would seem he is referring to characters from the original series. Obviously, there are a boatload of spinoffs coming up that take place in the same universe of Game of Thrones. Just don’t expect to see a prequel with Rhaegar Targaryen squaring off with Robert Baratheon at the ‘Battle of Ruby Ford’. These will be fresh tales from far in the future, way in the past, or far far away (presumably).

Also, don’t get too sad, as we have to wait until 2019 to see Game of Thrones season 8. So, let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves!
