HBO president confirms Deadwood reunion in the works

January 8, 2016 by James Garcia

Originally published January 8, 2016. Updated April 14, 2018.

Nearly a decade ago, HBO’s acclaimed and beloved Western drama Deadwood joined the rank of countless other shows that were cancelled all too soon. Since then, there have been several talks of resurrecting the series, and now, thanks to a report from TVLine, it appears that that’s actually a realistic claim.

Back in August, HBO entered “preliminary talks” with Deadwood creator David Milch to bring the series back either in a limited capacity or as a film, and now the president of the premium cable giant, Michael Lombardo, has confirmed that he’s personally given Milch the green light to resurrect the show, stating:

“David has our commitment that we are going to do it. We pitched what he thought generally the story would be – and knowing David, that could change. But it’s going to happen.”

Whether or not Lombardo and Milch spat in their hands before making such a deal is unclear at this time.

Lombardo states that the revival will take the form of an actual film rather than a limited HBO series. As far as when we could expect to see the mustachioed, bad-mouthed characters reunite, Lombardo does not provide a release date but says that once Milch is done with the project he’s currently working on, “he will turn his attention to [writing the] script for the Deadwood film.”
