Ian McShane thinks the time is right for a Deadwood movie, says HBO is “keen to do it”

June 10, 2017 by Jordan Jones

Of all the hit TV shows cancelled before their time, HBO’s Deadwood always stood out as one that cut especially deep. There was no closure to speak of, and for the people who followed the series for it’s entire three seasons, this felt frustrating at best. Now rumors of a Deadwood mini-series have been floating around practically since the show was cancelled in 2006. However, it seems like the time may finally be right for Deadwood to return to the screen, and provide fans with some much-needed closure. According to Ian McShane, this may happen quite soon. Speaking to Variety, Al Swearengen himself had this to say:

“There are signs that HBO are quite keen to make it. They’ve got the script. It’s when they’ll make an offer and when we can fit it in. We probably won’t start American Gods until probably the end of the year or early next year, so there’s a window when we can do Deadwood, but they need to get everybody together. I mean all the characters that David Milch wants to put in the show. I’m probably going to have breakfast with him later this week. But no, they’re keen to do it, and I’m sure it would seem not only artistically a perfect time to do it but also commercially because there’s always been a revised interested in Deadwood. It went off the air far too soon for all the reasons you say, but that’s a long time ago. It seems like a two hour film would be a nice thing for all the people that want to see it and all of us who were deprived of the gig too early.”

What do you think? Is the time right for Deadwood to return, or has too much time passed? Also, do you think a two hour film is enough to finish the story, or would you prefer an entire final season? Let us know in the comments below!
