In a case of “we all knew,” Velma is now officially a lesbian in new Scooby-Doo! movie

October 5, 2022 by EJ Moreno

Velma has a crush, and not surprisingly, it’s one of the new girls on the Coolsville block.

In the new Scooby-Doo animated film Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!, we see Velma (voiced by Kate Micucci) as she develops a crush on Coco Diablo (Myrna Velasco), the head of a crime syndicate.

While Velma has a dangerous type with her crush, it seems adorably normal, and like every other crush, we see in animation. The Scooby-Doo brainiac hilariously stumbles over her words and goes out of her way to let Coco Diablo know how she feels.

Via Yahoo! Movies, one scene sees “Daphne (Grey Griffin) teases her fellow mystery solver about the obvious attraction. ‘I didn’t know convicted felons were your type,’ she quips. A nervous Velma brushes the comments off before declaring, ‘Oh, who am I kidding? I’m crushing big time, Daphne!'”

Twitter user Scooby Doo History has a clip from the new movie below…

This is not the first time Velma’s feelings for women have been discussed. James Gunn, who wrote the first two live-action movies, teased that Velma may be gay, while Tony Cervone, producer of Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated series, flat out admitted it with a post on Instagram during Pride Month:

This new film is the first time Velma’s feelings have unfolded ‘in canon’ and takes a significant step for representation in entertainment.

Mystery Inc. has cracked the case to top all cases! They’ve tracked down Coco Diablo, the head of the notorious costume crime syndicate that colludes The Black Knight, Space Kook and the Ghost Diver. With Coco and her kitty in prison, Mystery Inc. thinks that they can finally enjoy a break. Wrong! Suddenly, menacing doppelgänger ghosts of the Scooby crew and favorite classic foes show up in Coolsville to threaten Halloween. Now it’s up to the meddling kids – and their unlikely new partner Coco – to unmask the latest scoundrel and save Halloween! For Shaggy and Scooby-Doo, with trick-or-treating on the line – this time it’s personal!

Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! is out now on digital and releases on DVD on October 18th.
