Is the Luther movie heading to Netflix?

July 15, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

Idris Elba’s heavy coat must be prepped and hanging on the back of a door awaiting the green-light for production to begin on the Luther movie sometime later this year, but now it appears there’s a twist the iconic BBC detective might not have seen coming with the news that the DCI’s feature-length adventure could be heading to Netflix.

According to the website Giant Freakin Robot, the long-gestating movie has found a home with the streaming giants. Beyond that there is very little information, and we are yet to hear any official confirmation on a project that has experienced its fair share of chopping and changing over the years.

The Luther series follows Elba as DCI John Luther, a talented yet obsessive and sometimes overly violent detective who has never been able to prevent himself from being consumed by the darkness of the crimes with which he deals while also struggling to separate his personal and professional lives.

The critically acclaimed BBC series premiered its first season in 2010 and ran for a total of five seasons, debuting its latest season in 2019. However, the future of the TV series is currently unknown as the U.K. broadcaster still hasn’t ordered a sixth season and instead is seemingly interested in developing a feature film to continue the story.

The Luther film is currently a joint production of 20th Century Fox Television, BBC Worldwide Productions, and Chernin Entertainment with Peter Chernin, Julie Gardner, Katherine Pope, Jane Tranter, and Elba himself serving as executive producers. Jamie Payne is on board to direct, having helmed the fifth series of the show.

What do you make of this news? Would you have rather seen Luther looming large on a cinema screen, or are you happy for it to be a Netflix event movie? Let us know by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
