J.J. Abrams hopes to make a Portal movie announcement soon

September 29, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Back in 2013, J.J. Abrams’s Bad Robot Productions announced a partnership with video game developers Valve, revealing that they would be working on big screen adaptation of the hit games Half-Life and Portal.

There was little news on either project until earlier this year when Abrams confirmed that both were still in development, and now the Star Wars: The Force Awakens director has revealed that he hopes to be able to make an official announcement on the Portal movie soon.

“We have a meeting coming up next week with Valve, we’re very active, I’m hoping that there will be a Portal announcement fairly soon,” Abrams told IGN during the premiere of Westworld. “We are having some really interesting discussions with writers, many of whom…once you said you’re doing a movie or show about a specific thing that is a known quantity you start to find people who are rabid about these things. As someone who loves playing Half-Life and Portal, it’s incredible when you talk to someone who just ‘gets’ it, it’s like, oh my god, it’s really the seed for this incredible tree you’re growing.”

Portal is a first-person puzzle platformer which was released as part of The Orange Box on Xbox 360 back in 2007. It was followed by the sequel Portal 2 in 2011.
