James Gunn didn’t write Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to set up Avengers: Infinity War

August 1, 2018 by Samuel Brace

James Gunn has revealed that his intention in writing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 wasn’t to set up the events of Avengers: Infinity War.

Director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, James Gunn, who has recently been fired from his role at Marvel due to some old and unseemly tweets, has revealed his writing process for Guardians Vol. 2 during a roundtable for the special features of Avengers: Infinity War’s home release (Via Screen Rant).

Gunn says that although his film leads nicely into Avengers: Infinity War, particularly with regards to Karen Gillan’s Nebula, his goal wasn’t to set up that movie:

“I didn’t ever have an ending for what Guardians 2 was supposed to be. I didn’t have a single story point that was ever discussed with Marvel before I wrote the story. So where that movie ends up, with Nebula going off and doing her thing, that’s what I mean by, people, we kind of do our own little thing. We write our own little story and then it goes off to [the Russos]. And I gave these guys a script very, very early on. And they were, like, ‘That’s perfect, because that works great for us with where Nebula is, what we want to do with the story.’ And it goes off.”

These comments certainly speak to the freedom that Marvel allowed directors like Gunn to make their movies, which is almost certainly reflected in the quality and uniqueness of the Guardians films.

Are you surprised that there was no direction for Gunn from Marvel when writing his script?
