James Gunn says “people should get off Matt Reeves’ nuts” regarding The Batman 2

June 21, 2025 by EJ Moreno

James Gunn is quick to defend a filmmaker under his DC Studios umbrella, telling fans they need to stop breathing down the neck of Matt Reeves about The Batman Part II.

The conversation sprang from a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, where Gunn was asked about the timeline of Reeves’ follow-up to the beloved Batman film. When the online rumors of possibly cancelling the project were brought up, Gunn made it clear he was “irritated” by the conversations.

Gunn fires off in the EW conversation: “People should get off Matt’s nuts because it’s like, let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it. That’s just the way it is. He doesn’t owe you something because you like his movie. I mean, you like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does. I am irritated by people. I mean, it’s just that thing people don’t need to be entitled about. It’s going to come out when he feels good about the screenplay. And Matt’s not going to give me the screenplay until he feels good about the screenplay.”

Amidst all the chaos, we were given a slight update, even if it didn’t seem too definitive. “We’re supposed to get a script in June. I hope that happens,” says Gunn. That would go hand-in-hand with rumors that Matt Reeves would be turning in his long-awaited script for The Batman 2 this Monday (6/23/25). We would still be a ways away from production, but it would give us movement on a film many DC fans want to see.

The Batman Part II was delayed by Warner Bros. last year from October 2, 2026, to October 1, 2027. Reeves’ The Batman dropped in 2022 and grossed $772 million at the worldwide box office. It would also spawn a successful spin-off series in The Penguin.

James Gunn has plenty on his plate. Not only is he the co-chair for the DC Studios brand, but he’s also heavy into promotion of his directorial effort, Superman, which is supposed to be a significant launching pad for the new era of the DCU. Gunn’s Superman opens in theaters July 11 from Warner Bros.
