James Gunn suggests Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will arrive in 2020

September 8, 2017 by Gary Collinson

We’re a little over a year and a half away from the culmination of Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the release of the as-yet-untitled Avengers 4, and as yet, we’ve got very little in the way of an idea as to what comes next for the MCU.

We do know that things will get underway in July 2019 with a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, and there’ll be an increased emphasis on the cosmic side of the universe, spearheaded by James Gunn and the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. (which will reportedly set the stage for the next 10 to 20 years of the MCU, according to Gunn)

As yet, there’s been no official word as to when we can expect the next Guardians movie, but posting on his Facebook page, Gunn has told a fan that Vol. 3 will be out “in a little under three years”, suggesting we’ll be looking at a summer 2020 release for the film.

As you’d expect, details on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are virtually non-existent at the moment, although it will see the return of Elizabeth Debicki’s Ayesha, a more significant role for Gamora, and the probable introduction of Adam Warlock.

Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 sees director James Gunn reuniting with returning cast members Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Michael Rooker (Yondu), Glenn Close (Nova Prime), Sean Gunn (Kraglin) and Laura Haddock (Meredith Quill) alongside new additions Pom Klementieff (Oldboy) as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki (The Man from U.N.C.L.E.) as Ayesha, Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight) as Ego the Living Planet, Chris Sullivan (The Drop) as Taserface, Tommy Flanagan (Sons of Anarchy) as Tullk and Sylvester Stallone (Creed) as Stakar.
