Adam Warlock was originally in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, will likely appear in Vol. 3

April 21, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Given the key role he plays in The Infinity Gauntlet storyline of Marvel Comics, there’s been a lot of speculation as to whether Adam Warlock would have been introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe prior to next year’s Avengers: Infinity War, with many expecting him to have featured in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Well, speaking to Slash Film to promote the release of the hotly-anticipated sequel, director James Gunn has revealed that Warlock was part of his early plans for the film, although he felt the roster was getting a little crowded and decided to keep him back for a future film.

“I love Adam Warlock,” said Gunn. He’s one of my favorite characters. In all truth, I wrote an early treatment where I had Adam Warlock as a part…this is your big scoop, because I don’t think I’ve told anybody this… It was Adam Warlock. He was a big part of the screenplay and I realized it was one character too many. And I adored the character. I adored what we had done with him. I think we did something really creative and unique with Adam Warlock. But it was one character too many and I didn’t want to lose Mantis and Mantis was more organically part of the movie anyway. So I decided to save him for later.”

During Slash Film’s junket interviews, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige then went on to reveal that Gunn is currently developing Adam Warlock to be included in a future Marvel film, with Gunn adding that: “He’s not in Infinity War. But he will be a part of the future Marvel cosmic universe and a pretty important part of that.”

Given that Gunn has recently signed on to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it would seem we now know when we can expect ‘Him’ to make his big screen debut.

Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled for release on April 28th 2017 in the UK and on May 5th in the States, with director James Gunn reuniting with returning cast members Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Michael Rooker (Yondu), Glenn Close (Nova Prime), Sean Gunn (Kraglin) and Laura Haddock (Meredith Quill) alongside new additions Pom Klementieff (Oldboy) as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki (The Man from U.N.C.L.E.) as Ayesha, Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight) as Ego the Living Planet, Chris Sullivan (The Drop) as Taserface, Tommy Flanagan (Sons of Anarchy) as Tulik, Sylvester Stallone (Creed) as Stakar and Michael Rosenbaum (Smallville) in an as-yet-unrevealed role.
