With Superman taking its box office haul to $579 million this weekend, it has been announced that James Gunn will be reuniting with David Corenswet’s Man of Steel for the filmmaker’s second movie in his new DC Universe, although it seems it won’t be a straight-up direct sequel.
As reported by Variety, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO Davis Zaslav revealed that Gunn is currently writing a new movie featuring Corenswet’s Superman, which he’ll also direct, and described it as the “next movie in the Super-Family”.
It’s unclear quite what that means – a Superman and Supergirl team-up, perhaps, a Superman and the Justice Gang-type ensemble, or a Krypto solo movie? – although given that Zack Snyder and the old DCEU followed up Man of Steel with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, we can presumably rule out a World’s Finest film at this early point in the new canon.
Next up from the rebooted DCU is the second season of James Gunn’s Peacemaker series, which is set to premiere on HBO Max later this month [watch the trailer here], while 2026 will bring us the Green Lantern series Lanterns along with the feature films Supergirl from director Craig Gillespie in June and Clayface from director James Watkins in September.
