We’ve known for a while that Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster wouldn’t be appearing in Thor: Ragnarok, with Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige making the announcement back in May of last year, and Portman herself following that up by saying she believes she’s now done with Marvel.
Well, thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we now know how Jane’s absence will be explained in Thor: Ragnarok, and it’s pretty simple really – she’s broken up with the God of Thunder.
He’s off exploring the universe, still trying to police it and control the mayhem,” said Hemsworth. “But he’s certainly enjoying being a drifter, being a solo cowboy out there.”
There is of course a new female lead in Thor: Ragnarok, with Tessa Thompson taking on the role of Valkyrie, and Feige has discussed the relationship between the two Asgardians, suggesting that it may not be romantic:
“We wanted Thor to encounter somebody that was near his equal and that his relationship with Jane may have evolved in unexpected ways in between The Dark World and Ragnarok and we wanted to pit him against a character who was much more his equal and in many ways his superior. Valkyrie is trying to not embrace any sort of Asgardian heritage that she has. Thor thinks maybe that will create a bond between them and, on the contrary, she wants to forget it all entirely.”

In Marvel Studios’ “Thor: Ragnarok,” Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok—the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization—at the hands of an all-powerful threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger—the Incredible Hulk.
Thor: Ragnarok is being directed by Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows) and features Marvel veterans Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Idris Elba as Heimdall and Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk alongside Cate Blanchett as Hela, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster, Karl Urban as Skurge and Sam Neill in an as-yet-unrevealed role. It is set for release on November 3rd, 2017.
