Jason Momoa teases potential DC double duty as Lobo

November 14, 2022 by EJ Moreno

How wild would it be to see Jason Momoa team with James Gunn for a Lobo project? Well, it seems that isn’t out of the realm of possibility, as the actor says things will get exciting in the future.

For a bit of a backstory, Momoa recently took to Instagram to hype the future of DC Studios under Gunn and Peter Safran’s leadership. In the post, he claims one of his DCU dreams is coming to fruition, leading fans to speculate if there was something more than Aquaman in his future.

Things got stranger when Gunn shared an image of Lobo on his new Mastadon profile shortly after Momoa’s post, and now the actor has had his first chance to address these rumors and fan speculation.

Speaking with CBR recently, Momoa was asked about his Instagram post. The actor decided to give fans a vague answer, but did not shut out any possibilities. During the interview, CBR told Momoa to “blink twice” if his dream project was Lobo.

“Well, I have to obviously blink, so there’s no way I can get out of this without blinking, but you know that would be amazing if that happened. I’m just happy that [James] Gunn is at the helm and [Peter] Safran, who is just like my heart. So I’m in good hands, and I think comic book fans around the world are going to be very excited.”

If you’re wondering how Momoa can get away with playing two significant characters in the DC Universe, it seems like one film can answer that problem. With The Flash rumored to be a restart for the DC timeline and the new leadership with Gunn, we can see a significant shakeup for the franchise. Some actors could take over iconic roles, while others could depart, opening the door for others.

Theoretically, Momoa’s Aquaman could be wiped out of existence in The Flash, making room for Lobo, or we could see a situation like The Batman. The Matt Reeves film, alongside Joker, lives outside the main DCEU timeline, and we could see Momoa’s Lobo there.

Whatever happens, we’ll next see Momoa in the DC Universe in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, coming in 2023.

“When an ancient power is unleashed, Aquaman must forge an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally to protect Atlantis, and the world, from irreversible devastation.”

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom reunites Jason Momoa with director James Wan and co-stars Amber Heard (Mera), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Black Manta), Patrick Wilson (Orm), Temuera Morrison (Tom Curry), Randall Park (Stephen Shin) and Dolph Lundgren (King Nereus), while Ben Affleck returns as Bruce Wayne. New additions to the cast include Indya Moore (Queen & Slim) as Karshon, Vincent Regan (300) as King Atlan, Jani Zhao (South) as Stingray, and Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones) in an as-yet-unrevealed role.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set for release on Christmas Day 2023.
