Jim Caviezel to return as Jesus in The Passion of the Christ sequel

February 2, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Back in June of 2016 it was announced that Mel Gibson and screenwriter Randall Wallace are developing a sequel to Gibson’s biblical epic The Passion of the Christ entitled The Resurrection, and now actor Jim Caviezel has revealed that he is on board to reprise the role of Jesus.

“There are things that I cannot say that will shock the audience,” Caviezel told USA Today. “It’s great. Stay tuned. I won’t tell you how he’s going to go about it. But I’ll tell you this much, the film he’s going to do is going to be the biggest film in history. It’s that good.”

As you can probably tell from the title, the film will reportedly cover the resurrection of Christ after his brutal death in the 2004 movie, which pulled in $612 million during its theatrical run. Gibson is expected to produce and direct the sequel, although that is yet to be officially confirmed.

As yet there’s no word on a release date for The Resurrection, although in 2016 Gibson was quoted as stating that it was “probably three years off”, pointing to a possible 2019 release date.
