Joaquin Phoenix out of the running for Doctor Strange

October 2, 2014 by Gary Collinson

Earlier in the week it was reported that Marvel Studios had given up on its number one choice for the role of the Sorcerer Supreme, ending negotiations with Joaquin Phoenix (Inherent Vice) and offering the role to Ethan Hawke, star of Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson’s Sinister.

Well, Deadline is now reporting that Phoenix is indeed out of contention for the lead, but before Ethan Hawke fans get too excited, the site is also stating that rumours of Hawkes’ casting “is speculation run wild.”

So, it looks like Marvel is back to square one in its search for Doctor Strange, with the likes of Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises), Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock), Johnny Depp (The Lone Ranger), Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) all having previously been linked to the role.

Who would you like to see as Doctor Strange? Let us know your thoughts…
