John Boyega open to Star Wars return, but only with Kathleen Kennedy and J.J. Abrams

May 31, 2021 by Gary Collinson

While he certainly hasn’t held back when it comes to criticising the way that his character Finn was handled in the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, actor John Boyega is open to returning to the galaxy far, far away – providing a couple of specific conditions are met.

“Whichever way, I am open to the conversation as long as it’s Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and maybe someone else, and the team, you know, it’s a no-brainer,” said Boyega in a recent interview which has surfaced on social media (via CBM):

Just last year, Boyega had said that he’d “moved on” from the role of the former Stormtrooper turned Resistance hero, and joked that “you ain’t gonna Disney Plus me” when asked whether we could see more of Finn’s adventures playing out either on the big screen or small. However, he later softened on the idea of a return, saying he’d be open to the prospect if his Sequel Trilogy co-stars Daisy Ridley and Oscar Isaac were joining him.

At this point, Disney and Lucasfilm don’t appear to have any plans for the Sequel Trilogy-era characters and are instead concentrating their efforts mainly on the years either side of the Original Trilogy with the likes of The Mandalorian, Star Wars: Andor and Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi. However, one has to imagine it’s only a matter of time before we find ourselves returning to the Resistance / First Order era in some capacity or other.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker sees J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) directing a cast that includes Star Wars veterans Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Greg Grunberg (Snap Wexley), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian), Ian McDiarmid (Emperor Palpatine) and Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa) as well as new additions Naomi Ackie (Lady Macbeth), Richard E. Grant (Logan), Dominic Monaghan (Lost), and Keri Russell (The Americans).
