John Boyega says Star Wars: The Last Jedi “was a bit iffy”

December 12, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Unless Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker somehow manages to outdo it, 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi looks set to go down as the most divisive chapter of the Skywalker Saga, and it seems it’s not only fans who are split over the movie.

Mark Hamill wasted little time in sharing his disappointment over the direction that Rian Johnson took the character of Luke Skywalker, shouting it from the rooftops at almost every opportunity during the promotional campaign and beyond, and now Hamill’s co-star John Boyega (Finn) has admitted that he also found Episode VIII “a bit iffy”.

“The Force Awakens I think was the beginning of something quite solid,” Boyega told HypeBeast. “The Last Jedi if I’m being honest I’d say that was feeling a bit iffy for me. I didn’t necessarily agree with a lot of the choices in that and that’s something that spoke to Mark [Hamill] a lot about and we had conversations about it.”

Given the mixed reaction to The Last Jedi, J.J. Abrams has a difficult task on his hands with The Rise of Skywalker, the filmmaker simultaneously having to please both those who hated Episode VIII, and those who enjoyed Johnson’s creative decisions. Let’s hope he manages to succeed.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker sees J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) directing a cast that includes Star Wars veterans Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Greg Grunberg (Snap Wexley), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) and Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa) as well as new additions Naomi Ackie (Lady Macbeth), Richard E. Grant (Logan), Dominic Monaghan (Lost), and Keri Russell (The Americans).
