John Carpenter returns to the Halloween franchise this month some forty years after the release of the original slasher classic, although this time he’s serving as executive producer rather than taking on directing duties himself (that honour falls to David Gordon Green).
It’s actually been eight years now since the release of Carpenter’s last directorial effort The Ward, but speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the legendary filmmaker has revealed that he still has ambitions to get back behind the camera.
“I would love to direct something, if it’s the right thing to do at my age,” said Carpenter. “I’m not going to make another Thing, I’ll tell you that. I’m not going to the Arctic again. I’m not going to do that. I want to take it easy. I want to enjoy myself! I’ve wanted to do something in Europe and I’ve wanted to do something in Venice. I haven’t gotten a story for it though. What a place! What a strange place! And Venice is sinking! Wow. But I don’t know. I’d love to do something in Europe. That would be fun to do.”
Although there isn’t a feature on his upcoming slate, Carpenter remains busy; he’s attached to produce the horror anthology series Tales for a Halloween Night for Syfy, and recently teased a possible Prince of Darkness TV series.
Master of horror John Carpenter will executive produce and serve as creative consultant on this film, joining forces with cinema’s current leading producer of horror, Jason Blum (Get Out, Split, The Purge, Paranormal Activity). Inspired by Carpenter’s classic, filmmakers David Gordon Green and Danny McBride crafted a story that carves a new path from the events in the landmark 1978 film, and Green also directs.
Halloween is being directed by David Gordon Green from a script by Green and Danny McBride. In addition to the returning Jamie Lee Curtis (Laurie Strode) and Nick Castle (Michael Myers), the film stars Judy Greer (War for the Planet of the Apes), Andi Matichak (Orange Is the New Black), Will Patton (Shots Fired), Virginia Gardner (Runaways), Miles Robbins (Mozart in the Jungle), Dylan Arnold (Mudbound) and Drew Scheid (Stranger Things).
