Joker becomes the most profitable comic book movie of all time

November 9, 2019 by Amie Cranswick

It’s already the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time (by some distance now), and as Joker continues its march towards the $1 billion mark at the box office, the film has now added another record to its collection as Forbes is reporting that the DC Films production is now the most profitable comic book movie ever.

According to Forbes, Joker’s current total of $957 million is 15.3 times its production budget of $62.5 million, which puts it ahead of 1994’s The Mask ($351 million from a $23 million budget) to make it the most profitable comic book adaptation in terms of budget versus global gross.

As the site highlights, other notable comic book movies when it comes to budget vs. gross include Venom ($854 million on a $90 million budget), Batman ($411 million/$35 million),Deadpool ($783 million/$58 million), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles($200 million/$13.5 million).

Joker’s box office run has been nothing short of incredible, and with possible awards recognition in its future, there’s no doubt that the Joaquin Phoenix-headlined origin story has been a huge, huge win for Warner Bros. and its DC division.

Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix (The Sisters Brothers), Robert De Niro (Goodfellas), Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Bill Camp (Red Sparrow), Frances Conroy (American Horror Story), Brett Cullen (Narcos), Glenn Fleshler (Billions), Douglas Hodge (Penny Dreadful), Marc Maron (GLOW), Josh Pais (Motherless Brooklyn), Shea Whigham (Kong: Skull Island), Douglas Hodge (Robin Hood) and Dante Pereira-Olson (You Were Never Really Here).
