Jon Bernthal to star in The Punisher special for Disney+

February 25, 2025 by Ricky Church

With Daredevil: Born Again just a week away from its premiere, Entertainment Weekly has announced Marvel Studios is developing a new special spinning out of the series for Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle, a.k.a. the vigilante The Punisher.

Bernthal first starred as Punisher in the second season of Netflix’s Daredevil as he butted heads with the Man Without Fear in his quest to avenge his family’s murder. He was given his own spin-off series The Punisher which ran for two seasons, continuing Frank’s mission to kill the people who conspired to murder him and his family and dole out punishment to those who escaped justice.

The Punisher special will be in the same vein as the Disney+ specials Werewolf by Night and Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Bernthal will co-write the script with Reinaldo Marcus Green (We Own The Night), who will also direct the special.  Marvel Television head Brad Winderbaum provided a little tease, saying “It’s like a shotgun blast of a story, but also has all the pathos and emotion that you want out of a Frank Castle story. It’s so exciting.”

Bernthal will be seen as The Punisher in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again as Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock/Daredevil tracks Frank down to ask for his help. The Punisher special will air in 2026 with the second season of Born Again.

In “Daredevil: Born Again,” Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), a blind lawyer with heightened abilities, is fighting for justice through his bustling law firm, while former mob boss Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) pursues his own political endeavors in New York. When their past identities begin to emerge, both men find themselves on an inevitable collision course.

The series stars Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Margarita Levieva, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Zabryna Guevara, Nikki James, Genneya Walton, Arty Froushan, Clark Johnson, Michael Gandolfini, Ayelet Zurer and Jon Bernthal.

Daredevil: Born Again streams on Disney+ from March 4th.
