Jordan Vogt-Roberts in talks for Metal Gear Solid movie

June 4, 2014 by Luke Owen

After last night’s news that Scott Derrickson was hired by Marvel to helm their Doctor Strange movie, it looks like Sony has found its ideal man to take on the big-screen adaptation of popular video game series Metal Gear Solid. According to Deadline, the studio is looking to Kings of Summer director Jordan Vogt-Roberts to tackle Solid Snake and his cohorts.

The movie will be produced by The Amazing Spider-Man‘s Avi Arad. The adaptation has been in development for a few years now as there have been problems between Sony and Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima on getting the story correct.

Metal Gear Solid started out life on the MSX2 and Nintendo Famicon in 1987, titled simply Metal Gear. The game was ported for a non-Japanese audience on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988 and it spawned an official sequel in Japan, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, and an unofficial NES sequel titled Snake’s Revenge. However, the game would reach its height of popularity when it was released on the Sony PlayStation now titled Metal Gear Solid. It spawned several sequels over the years including Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater on Playstation 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of Patriots on PlayStation 3. The first part of Metal Gear Solid V was released in March and the second part, The Phantom Plan, is yet to get a release date.

Metal Gear Solid isn’t the only video game adaptation in development at the moment with Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) helming a Splinter Cell movie and Assassin’s Creed is heading into production with Justin Kurzel in the director’s chair and Michael Fassbender in the lead role.
