Jude Law on not returning for The New Pope

May 22, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Originally published May 22, 2017. Updated April 16, 2018.

Earlier in the week it was announced that Paolo Sorrentino is developing a second season of his acclaimed drama series The Young Pope, although surprisingly it was revealed that Jude Law’s character Pope Pius XIII would be absent from the follow-up, titled The New Pope.

Speaking to Variety, Law has revealed that he is fine with the decision to go in a different direction, stating that: “It wasn’t that I wrapped it up assuming that I was done with it but I went in, we went in, to make a 10-hour film, and we did that. To say that there wasn’t room for more, I’d have been foolhardy. But it was clear from the get-go that we thought this is a great character and it’s a great world that he’s created here. But yeah, I didn’t go in thinking I’ll be doing this for the next 10 years.”

The New Pope is set to go into production next year. Law meanwhile can currently be seen in theaters in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and will soon be taking on the role of Albus Dumbledore in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2.
