Justice League had “one problem after another”, says Ben Affleck

March 6, 2020 by EJ Moreno

Ben Affleck is making rounds to promote his new film, The Way Back, and he stopped by GQ for a new video interview. While talking about the most iconic character of his career, the conversation turned to Justice League and his time as Batman in the DC Extended Universe.

Affleck starts by saying, “I had a better time on Batman v Superman, which I really enjoyed doing,” while looking back at his time as the Caped Crusader. “Justice League was unfortunately touched by some personal tragedy, a death in Zack’s [Synder] family. And like I say, sometimes things sort of work and gel, and sometimes you seem to be having one problem after another.”

“I had my fill of that,” continues Affleck. “They said, ‘Would you like to direct and star in a solo Batman movie?’ And I found that, at some point, I had lost my enthusiasm or passion for it. And I thought this should really be made by someone who for whom it’s their wildest dream come true. It was clear to me it was time to move on.”

Justice League was received poorly by audiences and critics, which led to much confusion about the future of the brand and if Ben Affleck would continue in his role. It wasn’t until January of 2019 that he’d step down from the role and allow Matt Reeves to take over the project. As we now know, Robert Pattinson will be donning the cape and cowl for a reboot of the series with The Batman.

Justice League was directed by Zack Snyder and featured Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta and Robin Wright as General Antiope, J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, Amber Heard as Mera and Ciaran Hinds as Steppenwolf.
