Keanu Reeves opens up about John Wick spinoff Ballerina as Catalina Sandino Moreno joins the film

December 9, 2022 by EJ Moreno

With John Wick: Chapter 4 and The Continental fast approaching, the John Wick franchise looks to expand with a new Ana de Armas-led film, Ballerina.

With production now underway, the man behind John Wick, Keanu Reeves, is opening up about the spin-off movie and what his Knock Knock and Exposed co-star de Armas will go through during the film.

Plot details involve a young woman with killer skills who uses said skills to get revenge when hitmen kill her family. During the CCXP convention, Reeves spoke about the project in more detail, confirming he’s only “in it for a few sequences.”

“Someone killed her father. Who could that be? And so it’s her journey [to] actually understand her past. She lost her father at a young age, and she doesn’t really know what happened. Only that someone came into the house and killed her father, who had a tattoo. And as we know in John Wick if you have a tattoo, something’s going on.”

Along with Reeves’ comments, it has also been announced that Catalina Sandino Moreno (From) will star alongside Ana de Armas, joining the film, confirms The Hollywood Reporter. Moreno will next be seen as the female lead in John Woo’s feature Silent Night.

“One of the challenges of casting Ballerina is making sure that the new roles are played by actors with as much power, emotional presence, and physical skill as Ana has,” producer Erica Lee said in a statement. “After working with Catalina on John Woo’s Silent Night, it was clear that she belonged at the top of our list, and it’s a thrill to be reuniting with her.”

Len Wiseman serves as the director for Ballerina, with Shay Hatten having written the screenplay. The producers are Lee, Basil Iwanyk, and Chad Stahelski. Brady Fujikawa and Chelsea Kujawa will oversee for Lionsgate. Along with Reeves, Anjelica Huston, Ian McShane, and Lance Reddick also reprise their roles from the John Wick films.

Ballerina has no release date, but John Wick: Chapter 4 hits cinemas in 2023. Watch the trailer here.
