Kenneth Branagh not in contention to direct Thor: Ragnarok

June 30, 2015 by Gavin Logan

Kevin Feige has been a busy man lately. Marvel Studios’ head honcho has been promoting the imminent theatrical release of the MCU’s next movie Ant-Man and during the press day Feige also revealed a bunch of information about some other upcoming Marvel flicks.

After officially announcing Tom Holland as the new Spider-Man and that he will appear in Captain America: Civil War, naturally lots of folk wanted to know more about his role. Feige talked openly about what to expect from the MCU version of Spider-Man and more importantly how he will interact with other superheroes.

Feige also discussed the upcoming Scott Derrickson directed Doctor Strange and answered questions about Black Panther too. But one movie that hasn’t really been talked about that much is Thor: Ragnarok.  Recent rumours suggested that Kenneth Branagh – who directed the first Thor movie back in 2011 – might be making a return, however when speaking to Collider Feige shut those rumours down very quickly:

“Not true. I don’t know where that came from.”

He also confirmed that a director hadn’t been found yet but to expect an announcement soon enough:

“Probably towards the end of the summer we would announce a filmmaker and a writer. May be the same person, I don’t know, may be two different people.”

It’s likely that Feige is teasing that an announcement will be made at the D23 Expo – Disney’s own version of Comic-Con – which will take place in Anaheim, California August 14-16. Considering Marvel won’t be attending SDCC this year we can probably expect a few other announcements too.

Thor: Ragnarok will open in the U.S. on November 3rd 2017.
