Kevin Feige says Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness “will make fans of Evil Dead II very happy”

March 20, 2022 by Amie Cranswick

Having been a pivotal figure in the rise of the modern superhero blockbuster with his original Spider-Man trilogy, director Sam Raimi returns to the Marvel universe this May for the hotly-anticipated Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. And, if that prospect wasn’t tantalising enough, the latest comments from Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige are sure to prove pleasing to Raimi fans as the super producer compares the movie to the classic Evil Dead II.

“[We want] it to be a Sam Raimi movie,” said Feige in an interview with Empire. “We would give notes like, ‘This action is cool – you’re competing with Avengers and Spider-Man, no problem – but don’t forget the Sam Raimi parts.’ You will see just how Sam Raimi it is, in ways that will make fans of Evil Dead II very happy.”

Raimi stepped in to direct Multiverse of Madness following creative differences between Marvel and original Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson. and Feige went on to explain how they went about enticing Raimi into the director’s chair for the first time since 2013’s Oz the Great and Powerful.

“Our executive producer, Eric Carroll, and [producer] Richie Palmer were calling around to see who was interested, and Sam’s agent said, ‘What about Sam Raimi?’ We thought, ‘That would be incredible, but there’s no chance of that.’ But he wanted to come in and meet. And in the first meeting, it was amazing to reconnect with him, and see his enthusiasm to jump back into this world.”
