Kurt Russell shares his thoughts on the Big Trouble in Little China remake

October 26, 2015 by Justin Cook

Back in June, when it was announced that Dwayne Johnson was on board to star in a remake of the 1986 cult classic Big Trouble in Little China, director John Carpenter almost immediately chimed in on the news saying that he was “ambivalent” about the idea of a remake. Now, Kurt Russell, who starred in the film as Jack Burton, is offering up his two cents on the upcoming project.

During a interview with Collider to promote his new genre-blending film Bone Tomahawk, Russell was asked about the remake, to which he replied, “I mean, I don’t know, I guess it’s that time now. Hey, you know, nothing sacred, why not? Go get it, good luck. I always think it’s interesting what’s gonna be done. Dwayne Johnson I don’t know what his take on it is gonna be, I don’t know what they’re gonna do. I always look at those movies when I see a remake and it’s like, ‘OK… there’s gotta be a reason.'”

He continued, “… Big Trouble is definitely a cult film. So I don’t know what their reasons are for remaking the movie, but I hope that they have the right reasons and I hope that they do it well and good luck.”

When Big Trouble in Little China hit theaters nearly three decades ago, it was largely unsuccessful, only bringing in around $11 million worldwide on a $20 million budget. While, in a certain sense, it has stood the test of time, the decision to remake it is undeniably a strange one, considering that the film’s fanbase isn’t exactly large; however, Johnson is one of the biggest movie stars in the world right now, so his name alone may be enough to get people interested.

For the remake, Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, best known for their work on X-Men: First Class, will pen the script.
