Lashana Lynch discusses her Captain Marvel role as Maria ‘Photon’ Rambeau

September 11, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

Actress Lashana Lynch has been chatting to Entertainment Weekly about her upcoming role in Captain Marvel, where she is set to portray Carol Danvers’ (Brie Larson) best friend and fellow Air Force pilot Maria Rambeau.

“Maria’s got a strength that’s undeniable, in that you don’t feel like you need to help her,” said Lynch. “She is thrown into many a situation in this movie that she’s never been a part of, never seen, never experienced — and she just learns it, immediately. She’s very resilient and very strong.”

Lynch also went on to discuss what she hopes to accomplish with her portrayal, stating: “I, especially after watching Black Panther, want to keep the black community in a place where they trust that every single African-American character in the Marvel universe is going to be represented positively, is going to be represented accurately, and is going to have a real through-line that the black community or people of color will be proud of. I want Maria to be upstanding. I want her to have a voice, I want people to understand her and relate to her, and I want mothers to be proud that there’s a single mother in the MCU.”

In the comic books, Maria is the mother of Monica Rambeau – a character who actually served as Captain Marvel back in the 1980s, and has subsequently used the names Photon, Pulsar and Spectrum. As we saw in the first-look images, Photon happens to be Maria’s call sign in the movie, so perhaps the character may have some superhero exploits of her own to look forward to somewhere down the line?

Jackson (The Avengers), Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lashana Lynch (Fast Girls), Gemma Chan (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Algenis Perez Soto (Sambá), Rune Temte (Eddie The Eagle), McKenna Grace (I, Tonya), Annette Bening (American Beauty), McKenna Grace (Gifted), Ana Ayora (The Big Wedding), Vik Sahay (Chuck), Kenneth Mitchell (Star Trek: Discovery), Chuku Modo (The Good Doctor), Clark Gregg (The Avengers) and Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald).
