The Last of Us writer: “I don’t want that movie to be made”

February 26, 2018 by Matt Rodgers

Seemingly stuck in pre-production purgatory, an adaptation of Naughty Dog’s blockbusting video game, The Last of Us, has been talked about since the game was released in 2013. Now the game’s director, Neil Druckmann, who has also also written the script for Sony Pictures and Screen Gems adaptation, has said that he doesn’t want that movie to be made.

Speaking to 10 Cloverfield Lane director, Dan Trachtenberg, at DICE Summit 2018, Druckmann addressed the current state of the film:-

“…And even I worked on the script for The Last of Us film, which was a direct adaptation. And now, having some separation from it, I look back and [am] like, ‘I don’t want that movie to be made. Maybe there’s something that could be done in the world, either focusing on other characters or other time. But, for me, and I know for Naughty Dog and for a lot of our fans, Nolan North is Nathan Drake, Ashley Johnson is Ellie, Troy Baker is Joel. And it would be very disorienting to see someone else in that role.”

It seems that Druckmann just doesn’t want his adaptation of the film making, but is probably resigned to the fact that Sony and Screen Gems will still move forward with a story from this extremely rich source material. That and the fact that it could be off-the-chart lucrative, having sold over ten million copies worldwide, and that’s not taking into account the add-ons, DLC, and remastered versions.

Are you hoping that the development delay simply means that they’re trying to get this right, or is it another case of wasting an opportunity, a la Silent Hill? Do we really need to see a The Last of Us movie when the game was so cinematic and thematically rewarding? As always, let us know what you think in the comments below.
