Léa Seydoux cast in new version of iconic French novel Emmanuelle

May 21, 2022 by EJ Moreno

Léa Seydoux could be tackling her most shocking role to date. The actress, known for daring roles and performances, will soon star in a new Emmanuelle adaptation.

As per Deadline, the Emmanuelle Arsan book “follows a young woman’s sexual journey from the arms of her husband to intimate encounters with the wives of his business associates, to further explorations wherein the philosophical and aesthetic facets of eroticism are expounded—and enacted—to the fullest degree.” It was first published in French in 1967 and spawned two sequels.

The novel was famously adapted into the 1974 film directed by Just Jaeckin and starring Sylvia Kristel. It saw international success with its controversial sex scenes, which saw the film to become Columbia Pictures’ first X-rated release. Since then, there have been countless copycats and knockoffs, launching erotic movies like this to a whole new level.

Audrey Diwan will helm Emmanuelle. This film will mark the English-language debut of Diwan, who developed the script with Rebecca Zlotowski. Diwan is fresh off winning the Golden Lion in Venice last year for her abortion drama Happening. Seydoux meanwhile is set to star in two films at this year’s Cannes: David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future and Mia Hansen-Love’s One Fine Morning.
