Legendary and Netflix developing Kong: Skull Island and Tomb Raider anime series

January 27, 2021 by Ricky Church

In the last few days we’ve gotten our fist look at Godzilla vs Kong and a director for the Tomb Raider sequel, but now there’s even more news for the two franchises as Netflix and Legendary Entertainment are developing two anime series based on the properties.

The King Kong anime will be titled Skull Island and will be set within Legendary’s MonsterVerse that includes Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla and its sequel King of the Monsters and the upcoming crossover Godzilla vs Kong. The anime will follow “a shipwrecked crew, an island of monsters, and one king to rule them all.” The series will be developed by animation studio Powerhouse Animation, the company behind Castlevania. Brian Duffield (Underwater) will write and executive produce the series alongside Jacob Robinson through his Tractor Pants production company.

Unlike Skull Island, the Tomb Raider anime will not be set within the setting of the recent reboot starring Alicia Vikander and its upcoming sequel, but will instead take place after the reboot trilogy of Tomb Raider video games the film is based on. The trilogy followed the origins of Lara Croft as an adventurer beginning with 2013’s Tomb Raider and followed the story with two sequels, Rise of the Tomb Raider in 2015 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider in 2018. All three games starred Camilla Luddington (Grey’s Anatomy) as the voice of Lara Croft.

Tomb Raider will “chart the globetrotting heroine’s latest and greatest adventure as she continues to explore new territory.” It will be written by Tasha Huo (The Witcher: Blood Origin) and executive produced by Huo and dj2 Entertainment Founder and CEO Dmitri M. Johnson (Sonic the Hedgehog), Stephan Bugaj and Howard Bliss and Robinson for Tractor Pants.
