Legendary hires Deadpool & Wolverine writer to bring Buck Rogers to the big screen

October 29, 2025 by Matt Rodgers

It feels as though news of a Buck Rogers movie adaptation has been doing the rounds forever, but now almost half-a-decade after securing the rights to the iconic IP, Legendary has tasked Deadpool & Wolverine co-writer Zeb Wells to come up with the script.

Deadline are reporting that Wells, who has written a number of acclaimed comics for Marvel, as-well-as being the creator and executive producer of current Disney+ hit Marvel Zombies, will finally attempt to bring the almost 100-year old character to life.

Created by Philip Francis Nowlan, Buck Rogers tells the story of a veteran of the First World War who finds himself in suspended animation after being exposed to radioactive gas, only to awaken nearly 500 years later in the year 2419.

The iconic character first appeared in Armageddon 2419 A.D., a short story published in a 1928 issue of Amazing Stories, before being adapted into a hugely successful syndicated comic strip and classic Universal Studios television series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, which ran for two seasons between September 1979 and April 1981.

Originally conceived by Legendary as a multi-platform franchise, there were even rumours that George Clooney could be journeying to the 25th Century for a small-screen outing. There is no word as yet as to whether those ambitious plans remain.
