Leonardo DiCaprio to play music producer Sam Phillips

October 22, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Hot on the heels of the news that Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way has picked up the rights to Captain Planet and Truevine comes word that the production company has now acquired Peter Guralnick’s book Sam Phillips: The Man Who Invented Rock ‘N’ Roll, with DiCaprio set to portray the legendary music producer.

The man behind the Memphis-based Sun Studio, Phillips’ was influential in the careers of artists such as Elvis Presley, Ike Turner, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins. DiCaprio, Guralnick and Appian Way’s Jennifer Davisson will produce the biopic, while Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger is also on board following his work as executive producer on HBO’s Vinyl.

Deadline reports that DiCaprio is currently weighing his options for his next acting role following his Oscar win for The Revenant, and that alongside Truevine and the Sam Phillips biopic, he may also reunite with Martin Scorsese on the long-gestating Dr. HH Holmes movie The Devil In The White City.
