Lionsgate acquires Bill Skarsgard-led The Crow reboot for 2024 release

September 8, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

For years it has been a case of “It can’t rain all the time” when it comes to remaking The Crow, but we’re moving ever nearer to the return of Eric Draven with the news that Lionsgate has acquired the distribution rights to the Bill Skarsgard-led film, and a 2024 release date is now likely.

Deadline reports that the $50 million budgeted film, which was shot on location in Prague and Munich, has been snatched up by the studio for domestic distribution for an eight-figure sum, and that the movie is expected to release next year.

Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) has directed the new adaptation of James O’Barr’s classic comic book from a script by Zach Baylin (King Richard), while Skarsgard will be joined in the cast by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter FKA twigs (Honeyboy), Danny Huston (30 days of Night), Laura Birn (Foundation), Sami Bouajila (A Son), and Jordan Bolger (The Woman King).

The Crow was first adapted for the screen in 1994, with Brandon Lee portraying Eric Draven in what was tragically his final role after he was accidentally killed on set.

Plans for this remake date back almost fifteen years, the project having passed through the hands of directors Stephen Norrington, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, Francisco Javier Gutierrez and most recently Corin Hardy, while the list of actors linked to the title role include Bradley Cooper, Mark Wahlberg, Channing Tatum, Ryan Gosling, James McAvoy, Tom Hiddleston, Luke Evans, Jack Huston, Nicholas Hoult, Jack O’Connell, Jason Momoa and even Alexander Skarsgard, Bill Skarsgard’s brother, who was reportedly offered the role back in 2013.
