Lucasfilm has put a Tatooine-set Star Wars spinoff on hold

August 19, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Back in June it was reported that Disney and Lucasfilm had decided to put all of their planned Star Wars Anthology movies on hold following the dismal box office performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story, and while the rumour was swiftly denied by Lucasfilm, it does seem that at least one project has had the brakes applied.

Speaking to CinemaBlend, Lucasfilm production designer Neil Lamont has revealed that one project now on hiatus would have seen a return to the familiar Star Wars location of Tatooine.

“We were just starting our work on another Star Wars spin-off and yeah, we were actually just making our mark on Tatooine — which would have been interesting — and some other new galaxies,” said Scanlan. “So hopefully, if that comes back, we’ll get the chance to be able to do that further.”

At this point, it seems that Disney and Lucasfilm are going to keep their Star Wars cards very close to their chest for the foreseeable future, so for the time being all we can do is speculate as to what movies may still be in the pipeline beyond Rian Johnson’s new trilogy and the series of films from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

It was thought that Lucasfilm was set to begin production on the planned Obi-Wan Kenobi solo movie following the completion of Star Wars: Episode IX, but with star Ewan McGregor stating this month that he isn’t aware of any plans for a Kenobi film, it’s very possible this is the project that Scanlan is referring to with his comments.

That being said, there had also been whispers about a Jabba the Hutt film, which Solo may very well have been planting the seeds for given that the film ended with Han and Chewie en route to meet with the gangster, and Darth Maul’s Crimson Dawn crime syndicate out for revenge for the death of Dryden Vos.

And of course, we can’t discount Logan director James Mangold’s Boba Fett film paying a visit to Tatooine either, given the bounty hunter’s working relationship with Jabba (if pre-Return of the Jedi), or his last known whereabouts being the belly of the sarlacc at the Great Pit of Carkoon (if post-Return of the Jedi).
