Lucasfilm yet to decide on the next Star Wars movie after The Rise of Skywalker

November 20, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Kathleen Kennedy, the head of Lucasfilm, says the studio hasn’t quite decided on its next Star Wars movie yet.

With The Mandalorian currently delighting Star Wars fans on Disney+ and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order proving a hit with video game fans, it’s a good time for the franchise – especially with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker only weeks away.

But what’s coming to cinemas next after Episode IX? Well, apparently Lucasfilm hasn’t yet decided as there are a lot of variables at play. Speaking to Rolling Stone, studio exec Kathleen Kennedy said:

“We’ve got various things we’re looking at and various ways in which we can begin or not. As you can imagine. You know, do you go back? Do you go forward? All those questions are being asked. Do we stay in this galaxy? Do we go to another? The universe is never-ending. [Laughs.] The good news and the bad news. They have endless possibilities. It’s liberating, it’s exciting, and it creates a lot of pressure and anxiety as well.”

With all the options available to them (including Kevin Feige’s project and Rian Johnson’s trilogy), it’s going to be fascinating to see what they end up deciding. Many fans would love the franchise to go back in time far beyond the Prequel Era but we will have to wait and see which direction Lucasfilm opts to go.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set for release on December 19th 2019 in the UK and December 20th 2019 in North America. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker sees J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) directing a cast that includes Star Wars veterans Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Greg Grunberg (Snap Wexley), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) and Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa) as well as new additions Naomi Ackie (Lady Macbeth), Richard E. Grant (Logan), Dominic Monaghan (Lost), and Keri Russell (The Americans).
