Lucy sequel in development as Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp adjusts its strategy following record losses

October 3, 2017 by Gary Collinson

In the run up to the release of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, filmmaker Luc Besson revealed that he was already working on the script for a THIRD instalment.

However, with the sci-fi epic failing to set the box office alight, and Besson’s EuropaCorp posting record losses of $135 million over the last financial year, it would seem highly unlikely those sequels will ever see the light of day.

Nevertheless, it seems Besson is keen to return to another of his (less expensive) films, with Variety report that EuropaCorp is actively developing a sequel to the Scarlett Johansson-headlined action thriller Lucy, and that Besson has already finished the screenplay.

The same article reveals that EuropaCorp is completely overhauling its strategy in an effort to turn around its fortunes and get back into the black, with the company now planning to produce one English-language film and two French movies per year, working on modest budgets of around $25 million to $25 million (unlike Valerian, which – at around $180 million – is both the most expensive independent film and most expensive European film ever made).

EuropaCorp’s new strategy will kick off with a Besson-directed action thriller with a female lead, budgeted at around $30 million, although it’s unclear whether this is the aforementioned Lucy sequel, or a new project entirely.
