‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage biopic in development from producer Kenan Thompson

September 28, 2025 by Gary Collinson

The madness is getting ready to run wild on the big screen, with Deadline reporting that a feature biopic of legendary pro wrester ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage is in the works.

The film is being produced by Kenan Thompson of Kenan & Kel fame, who previously worked with Macho Man on a Nickelodeon promo back in 1999, and is based on a script by Eric Shapiro and Savage’s late brother Lanny Poffo, better known to wrestling fans as The Genius.

Born into a wrestling family, Randy Savage began his career in the early 1970s and rose to become one of its most prominent figures during the boom periods of the 1980s and 1990s. Appearing for both the then-WWF and WCW, Savage held multiple world championships as well as headlining two WrestleMania events among countless pay-per-view appearances. He also branched out into film and television in the late 1990s and 2000s before his death of a heart attack aged 58 in 2011.

“Beyond excited for this one,” said Thompson, who is producing alongside Johnny Ryan Jr. through their Artists for Artists production company. “Macho Man is hands down one of the greatest of all time and can’t wait to bring his story to the screen.”

“Macho Man Randy Savage was the greatest showman of all time and the OG bad boy of entertainment,” added Ryan Jr. “His outfits were as electric as his personality and he’s so much more than an artist, he’s an icon. Lanny and Eric did a great job capturing this story and the crazy 80s wrestling era that turned wrestling figures into life long pop culture icons.”

“Some stories come once in a lifetime, not just to be told, but to ignite,” said Paul Coy Allen of Midas Entertainment. “Macho is one of those rare stories that electrifies across generations. We are honored to partner up with AFA and Range Media to share Randy’s story with the world.”
